Trip Report - Eastern Sierra

Journal Entry: Tue May 6, 2008, 10:09 AM
Went up U.S. Route 395 on last Thursday night. We got to Convict Lake after the 6 hour drive. I would have stopped along the way for some night photography but the moon was nowhere to be seen so it was pitch black.

On Friday we headed up to the Mammoth Mountain Lodge for some early lunch and then everyone took a nap while I hiked around Convict Lake. There was still some snow banks that I had to cross. If I would have fallen I would have tumbled into the lake. Walked through the beautiful aspen groves in the haunting inlet of the lake. In the 1800's there was a famous shootout there.

Spent Saturday fishing various streams and lakes including Silver Lake, Rush Creek, Owens River, and Convict Lake. Drove around the beautiful June Lake loop and the Mammoth Scenic loop. Spent some time on dirt roads looking for a vacant hot spring but they were all in use. They were still in use at 10pm when we last checked before settling in around the fire at camp.

Sunday morning we broke camp and headed down to Rock Creek Lake. The lake was still completely frozen and while we were there it started snowing. It was magical. Back down Route 395 with one more stop to hike around looking for natural arches in the Alabama Hills and then driving up the death-defying Whitney Portal Road. Saw tons of wildflowers in the desert and even saw a huge rattlesnake crossing a dirt road I was driving.

I have started going through the photos so they will start showing up.
