Alabama Hills and the Sierras by shubat Alabama Hills and the Sierras by shubat
This is an HDR I did while exploring Movie Flat Road in the Alabama Hills. The Sierra Nevada Range is in the far background with Mount Whitney visible near the right end of the photograph. It is the highest peak in the contigious United States at an elevation of 14,505 feet (4421 meters). Lone Pine Peak is the mountain at the center that appears tallest but that is only because it is closer. Its elevation is 12,944 feet.

doing it as an HDR helped saturate the colors without ruining it. thanks.

Great! How did you do this with the Nikon D40? I just got one and it has no bracketing.

i use a tripod and I have to use manual mode...then I just bracket it myself while being careful to not move the camera. It can be tough sometimes but it works well. This shot was hard to do because the wind was so strong it was blowing over my tripod.

Ahh, cool stuff. Can't wait to find something suitable for some HDR.

i try to use it with really contrasty scenes like this...seems to work best when you find a scene like that.

My favourite part of this pic is how you've captured the jagged broken rock of the mountain in the foreground, it's a great detail :D

Nice angle on a lovely, lonely view. It doesn't shout HDR at you, which makes it the best kind of HDR :)

i totally agree. an HDR shouldn't look unreal, it should just bring out some of the hidden details and colors. thanks.

Wonderful image

I've been to the top of Mt. Whitney twice and spent some time scrambling in the Alabama Hills, almost got stuck once

I want to go to the top someday. When I was 11 or 12 I went with my dad and we made it to the Alpine Basecamp but there was too much ice to go further without crampons. I can imagine the Alabama Hills having some great climbs.

It is definitely an amazing place. If you google "Alabama Hills" you will find that a lot of movies were filmed here like Tremors, How the West Was Won, Gunga Din, The Lone Ranger, and scenes from Gladiator.
